We use conservation (or preservation) framing as the method of picture framing for almost all of the artwork we frame. Conservation framing protects and preserves your artwork. If artwork is not properly framed in a preservation manner, it can quickly succumb to the damaging effects of light, humidity, acid in the framing materials, dust or insects. Professional picture framers are trained in the proper techniques and materials for preservation framing, ensuring the protection and beauty of your artwork for many generations.
Conservation Framing Framing Products
Matboard protects artwork from being aged, faded and deteriorated by harmful pollutants and acid by-products in the environment and within the framed piece. Matting also creates an air space between the art and the glazing. This space helps to dissipate moisture and to prevent the art from becoming fused to the glazing. When no mat is desired, we attach a hidden spacer to the inside of the frame to ensure that the glazing is elevated off the artwork.
Conservation Glass: Ultraviolet light can fade, deteriorate or yellow artwork. UV glass and acrylic filters 97% of the harmful light (as compared to about 47% with regular glass). In fact, we rarely use regular glass anymore because the benefits of conservation glass are so great compared to the difference in price. Choosing conservation glass for your piece of artwork is the single most important step you can take in protecting your artwork.
The artwork below was framed with regular glass on the left, and conservation glass on the right. You can see the damage sunlight and fluorescent light can do!
